Technology at The Link is intended to allow
pupils to benefit from the experience of creating artefacts from
wood, plastic, metal and other materials.
Pupils gain knowledge and understanding,
and also some pleasure from their participation.
Projects in the early stages may be such
artefacts as key racks, puppets, model vehicles, games, etc.
The intention being to build up basic gross and fine motor
skills and allow the pupils some degree of input/personalisation
and to gain pleasure from their creations. As pupils progress
and their skills improve a more personal choice of project is
encouraged.
The National Curriculum is followed as
closely as possible, adapted to suit the needs and abilities of
the pupils.
The workshop is equipped with a range of
basic hand tools that will allow cutting, shaping, drilling,
joining of wood, plastic and metal. We are also equipped with
some powered machines, i.e. band-facer, bench mounted drilling
machine, scroll saw, and band saw which the pupils may use, when
appropriate, under supervision.
Pupils are taught in small groups of half
class sizes, usually 4, which allows for a safe working ratio.
Years 10 and 11 pupils contribute through
their technology to the ASDAN accreditation scheme.
Pupils have contributed to the school
environment through their technology activities making small
tables for the garden area, bird feeders and assembling benches
and carrying out maintenance on outdoor school furniture used by
the school population at breaks. There would be scope to extend
these activities to the wider community given greater time.
