Art and Design gives all students the
opportunity to explore their creativity through projects
designed around the National Curriculum.
Students are encouraged to learn the visual
language of art. We explore the work of other artists, crafts
people and designers, and aim to develop an awareness of the
diverse roles and functions of art, craft and design, in the
contemporary world and in different times and cultures.
Students are provided with a range of
materials, tools and techniques to develop practical, technical
and critical skills. For example Year 7’s project entitled
‘Explore Discover, and Make’ covers a range of art activities;
drawing from observation and imagination; collage; colouring
with crayons, fibre pens and pastels; print making; making
3-dimensional work using modelling clay and papier mache;
looking at other artists and methods of working through films,
internet and books in the Art room and Library.
All years follow a similar scheme of
activities, aiming to develop skills and abilities in more
depth. All years have the opportunity to do seasonal art
activities such as making decorations and cards for times of
celebration. Cross curricular links occur with projects such
as, props for Drama and 3-D work for Science. Aspects of art
are used in most subject areas.
Years 8 – 11 use ICT for research in Art
history, for example, and designing posters, etc.
Years 10 and 11 follow ASDAN and GCSE Art
course. In some cases students go on to take the GCSE Art
examination. An appropriate syllabus is devised for individual
candidates.
The Art curriculum aims to make learning
an enjoyable experience for each student.
